Streetsville Perogies 6 – Barrie Nordiques 1

The Streetsville Perogies (11-2-1) are looking unbeatable early this season. After a 6-1 drubbing of the Barrie Nordiques (3-10-1) they lead the RHL with 23 points. Derek Roy lead the way with 3 goals 1 assist and a +5 rating. The Nordiques were hurt badly by Rob Blake who turned in an embarrassing -7 rating this week. Barrie will look to bounce back this week but things don’t get any easier as they cruise into Chatham to take on the 3rd place Clamhammers.

Chatham Clamhammers 5 – Oakville Red Wings 2

Speaking of the Chatham Clamhammers (8-6-0), they topped the Oakville Red Wings (6-7-1) this week 5-2, sending the Wings down to 9th place. They had a solid goaltending show with 4 wins and a .940 SV%, while Tomas Holmstrom was a force in all categories posting 3goals, 2 assists, +5 rating, 6PIM and 1GWG.

Alliston 93 Leafs 4 – Georgetown Gophers 1

In the battle of the cousins the Alliston 93 Leafs (8-4-2) beat up his little dangler cousin Georgetown Gophers (3-8-3) by a 4-1 count. The Leafs high octane offense was lead by a D man – Brian Campbell who registered a goal and 6 assists with a +3. The Gophers struggled with top pick Marian Hossa on the shelf all week.

China Town Jets 4 – Sarnia Colts 2

Despite the Sarnia Colts (3-9-2) getting the most votes on being the RHL Championship team this season, the team continues to struggle as they drop a 4-2 decision to the China Town Jets (6-5-3). The Jets had some great individual performances from Spezza, Sundin and Sedin as the 3 S’s sure know how to score. China is looking forward to having starting goaltender Ray Emery back between the pipes soon. The Colts meanwhile are hoping anyone of their 3 goalies steps up as a starter as they combined for no wins and a .831 SV% this week.

Lindsay Wazooz 4 – Kwik-E-Mart Gougers 3

The Wazooz (7-5-2) held on for a win lead by Huselius with 4 goals and Sheldon Sourays 14PIM’s. The Gougers (6-6-2) meanwhile were unstoppable in the assists category with 21 makers lead by Justin Williams 5. The Gougers face the Colts this week while the Wazooz roll into Burlington to face the Firecats.

Peterborough Mullets 4 – Burlington Firecats 3

The .500 Mullets (6-6-2) edged out the Burlington Firecats (7-6-1) 4-3 this week. Both teams had the offence in high gear with Mullets lead by Nik Antropov (yes that’s what I said) with 2 goals, 2 assists, +2 and 16PIMs. Meanwhile Henrik Zetterburg was on fire for the Cats striking for 3 goals, 4 assists and a +7.

Transaction Observations and Injuries

Patience is running thin in the RHL this week, at least that’s the theme on the waiver wire. Once hopeful stars are now being released after an early dismal performance. Almost 1/8 of the season is already behind us and teams are not waiting with Bertuzzi, MacDonald, Shanahan, Kozlov and Selanne all being cut loose. Teams are replacing them with streaking players such as Jeff Hamilton, Lombardi, Morrison, Kotalik and Burns. It will be interesting to see which of these big names will find a new home over the coming days as they come due on waiver time.

This week in RHL History

Did you know on this week back in 2003 The Gaping Wazooz (9-4-1), decided to do some eating of its own, and did so at the expense of the Albuquerque Isotopes (3-8-3). The Wazooz dominated the goaltending with 4 wins and a .963 save percentage, while it edged out other wins in Assists, +/- and PIM. A strong 5-1-1 week put them number 1 in the league with 19 pts.

The Gaping Wazooz enjoyed great success in the inaugural RHL season finishing the regular season 82-60-12 good enough for 2nd place and went on to beat the 1st place Gougers in a 3-3 tiebreaker to capture the first ever RHL Cup. And now you know.
